Kyiv [Ukraine], January 29: On January 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly announced his income for the two years 2021-2022, as part of a campaign to promote transparency and eliminate corruption if Kyiv wants to join the European Union (EU).
On the website of the President of Ukraine , Mr. Volodymyr Zelensky noted that his income decreased in 2021 and continued to decrease in 2022, when Russia launched a special military campaign in Ukraine.
This is the first time he has publicly disclosed his income , according to Reuters.
Specifically, in 2021, his and his family's income is 10.8 million hryvnia (about 285,200 USD) per year, down 12 million hryvnia compared to the previous year.
The 2021 figure includes income from the sale of government bonds that brought in $142,000.
In 2022, the income of the President of Ukraine's family will decrease by another 3.7 million hryvnia because the income from renting real estate he owns has decreased because of the outbreak of hostilities.
Mr. Zelensky called on government officials to disclose their income as part of efforts to increase transparency and eliminate corruption as Ukraine seeks to meet standards if it wants to join the EU.
On January 27, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that it had uncovered a corruption scheme in the process of purchasing weapons for the country's military. The total amount of corruption amounted to about 40 million USD.
The SBU said the incident was related to the purchase of 100,000 mortars for the military. The Ukrainian side paid in advance and a sum of money was transferred abroad.
However, to date the Ukrainian army has not received any mortar shells.
