Copenhagen [Denmark], January 29: After 12 years under the leadership of popular President Sauli Niinisto, Finland on Sunday began the process of electing a new head of state.
In the first round of the polls, nine candidates are in the running to succeed Niinisto, who was not allowed to run again after two six-year terms in office. It is not expected that any of the candidates will win outright. If none receives more than half of the votes in the first round, the two strongest candidates will go to a run-off in two weeks. (DPA)
