Washington [US], November 8: Following Donald Trump's election victory, US President Joe Biden has promised a peaceful handover of power on January 20.
"I will do my duty as president. I will fulfil my oath and honour the constitution," Biden said in Washington on Thursday. "On January 20, we will have a peaceful transfer of power in America." Biden said he intends to make full use of the last days of his term of office.
After his defeat against Biden four years ago, Trump refused to recognize the election result. He tried unsuccessfully to challenge it in court and also stayed away from Biden's inauguration. Now President-elect Trump has accepted Biden's invitation for a conversation at the White House.
Biden encouraged his fellow Democrats after the devastating defeat of their candidate Kamala Harris against Trump in Tuesday's presidential election.
"We lost this battle. The America of your dreams is calling for you to get back up," he said. "We're going to be okay, but we need to stay engaged. We need to keep going."
The president stressed that he had 74 days left of his term, and he intends to make "every day count"
Speaking of the US electoral system, Biden said. "It is honest, it is fair, it is transparent. It can be trusted, win or lose."
During the election campaign, Trump had repeatedly cast doubt on the voting process and accused the Democrats of wanting to cheat. (Agencies)
